Magic keys that needed to be found to unlock the bonus stages to get the pieces of the amulet. Had its story with Wizpig taking over the island and Diddy and friends needing to save it. The way they incorporated an actual adventure into a racing game was so fascinating. I spent a lot of time playing both Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing, but DKR was just something so unique and special. Also not very memorable tracks and limited cast. The drift/boost mechanic is fine, but I haven't put in enough time to get really used to it.Īlso, low key best feeling racer of that era is Mickey's Speedway USA, despite the lack of drift boosting and hard limit on drift time length. The only thing I can comment on is the steering feels sluggish compared to the other games. Obviously being in the Mario universe, the cast is great, and all the tracks are very memorable.ĬTR is the one I've put the least amount of time in, its kinda unfair in terms of my personal ranking, especially since I have no nostalgia for Crash. Also, while I enjoy the challenge of the harsh rubberbanding, it sucks when it breaks and slingshots one racer ahead, never to be seen again. MK64 has the best multiplayer, but the races with 3 players or above feel bad cause the framerate takes a big hit. Apart from Diddy, and the 2 characters who went onto their own games, the cast and tracks are largely forgettable. I do also wish the drift mechanics were different/better, and had a drift boost mechanic. That said, I have played a little bit of the original, recently, for research purposes.ĭKR has the best single player, but apart from some bosses, its overall too easy. I played the hell out of DKR and MK64 as a child, but didn't have a PS1, so I don't have nostalgia for CTR.
